Agric Workers Union calls for intensified campaign against child labour
The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of the Trades Union Congress, has pledged to step up the campaign to curb child labour, especially in cocoa growing communities.
They would work hard to discourage people from engaging children in difficult and hazardous on-farm activities.
This was at the 19th quadrennial delegates’ conference of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Union in Kumasi.
Mr Offei Nkansah, the General Secretary, said it was important for all to accept to do more to protect children from all forms of labour in cocoa production that were unhelpful to their physical development.
He said the focus should be on assisting and ensuring that they were enrolled in school and retained.
Mr Nkansah said it was by doing this that the children and the nation could be assured of a secure future.
He also drew attention to the need for members of the Union to help farmers to adopt improved farming technologies to boost production and returns.
Mr Clement Alosebunko Kaba, the Regional Chairman, asked them to work with total commitment, ensure good time management and avoid waste at the work place.
