253 people displaced by tidal waves at Abuesi

Heavy tidal waves has destroyed 40 houses and as a result rendered 253 people homeless at Abuesi in the Shama District of the Western Region.

Victims are currently lodging with relatives and friends as their properties including room furniture, television sets, DVD players, carpets are either soaked or swept away.

The Shama District NADMO Coordinator, Mr. Paul Awortwe told the GNA in an interview that, the incident occurred on Monday August 29.

He said the District Chief Executive for the area, Mr. Enoch Kojo Appiah and the Member of Parliament for Shama, Mr. Gabriel Essilfie visited the place to assess the extent of damage on Tuesday.

Mr. Awortwe said he had registered the affected persons and forwarded the report to the regional NADMO Secretariat office for relief items to support them.

The NADMO District Coordinator noted that, sand winning is one of the contributory factors of the tidal waves and advised the residents to stop activity.

He indicated that, some residents had ignored several warnings and continued with the illegal sand wining with impunity adding, despite a monitoring team put in place two years ago to curb the practice.

He said the team would intensify its monitoring to arrest recalcitrant persons to bring sanity to the area.
