Road accidents increase in Brong-Ahafo Region

Road accidents reported in the Brong-Ahafo Region increased from 454 in 2009 to 593 in 2010 and killed 401 people.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Paul Wesley Baah, the Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), told the GNA on Thursday that the Region recorded 430 accidents from January to August this year.

The accidents involved 504 vehicles and there were 169 deaths, whilst 378 people were injured.

He said last year 796 vehicles were involved in the accidents, which injured 1,138 people whilst 527 persons sustained injuries in accidents that involved 564 vehicles the previous year.

In 2008, the region recorded 110 accidents that killed 53 people and injured 91. The total number of vehicles involved in the accidents was 131.

On motor traffic offences, ASP Baah said in July and August this year, 86 drivers paid total fines of GH¢18,012 for various offences.

He said human error, drunk-driving, over speeding, over loading and wrongful overtaking were some of the contributory factors to road accidents in the region.
