NADMO to form disaster awareness clubs in schools

Mr Ransford Owusu Boakye, Eastern Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), on Friday announced the formation of disaster awareness clubs in Schools soon to help in the reduction of disasters in the country.

He said the organization would inculcate the importance of managing disaster into children and the youth to make them partners in disaster risk management.

Mr Boakye was speaking at the launch of world Disaster Reduction Day Celebration and inauguration of the Disaster Management Committee at Adeiso in the West Akyem Municipality.

The World Disaster Reduction Day would be celebrated on October 13, 2011.

The NADMO coordinator observed that, Government spent huge sums of money on disasters in the country, which could otherwise be used for the funding of development projects.

He said disaster management reduction should be a problem for all, adding that people should not build on water ways to allow free flow of water when there was heavy rainfall.

Mr Boakye urged all to plant trees on their compounds, markets and other places to serve as wind brakes.

Mr George Mensah Akpalu, West Akyem Municipal Chief Executive, appealed to all to take active part in communal labour to desilt their gutters to allow for free flow of water whenever there were heavy rains.
