Ghana among top seeds for CAN 2012 draw
Ghana’s Black Stars have been named amongst the top seeds at the official draw of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for October 29 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the Black Stars as the top seeds in addition to Cote d’Ivoire and co-hosts, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
According to CAF, the top seeds were decided based on the performance of the 14 qualified teams at the last three previous tournaments.
Information gathered by GNA Sports indicates that winners were awarded seven points, five points for runners-up, three points for semi finalists, two points for quarter finalists and one point for teams eliminated in the first round.
The points accrued from the Angola 2010 will be multiplied by a co-efficient of three, two for Ghana 2008 and one for Egypt 2006.
Equatorial Guinea will be in Group A and Gabon in Group C, meaning that Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire will be drawn in Group B and D.
Meanwhile there the information states that the Stars will be based in Bata (Equatorial Guinea) or Franceville (Gabon) depending on their placing in the draw.
Pot 2 is made up of Angola, Tunisia, Zambia and Guinea; Mali, Senegal, Morocco and Burkina Faso are in Pot 3 whilst Sudan, Libya, Botswana and Niger constitute Pot 4.
The Black Stars were losing finalists at the last edition held in Angola in 2010.
