Ghana Revenue Authority destroys $74,000 worth of cigarettes

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has destroyed 139 cartons of seized cigarettes worth $74,000 in Kumasi.

The cigarettes smuggled into the country, were confiscated by the Authority in Kumasi between March and May this year.

Mrs Mawuse Esi Dadjo, Assistant Commissioner of the Customs Division of the GRA in Kumasi, who spoke to newsmen after the exercise, expressed concern about the way and manner some businessmen engaged in smuggling of goods and said the situation is seriously affecting the socio-economic development of the country.

She noted that such activities denied the payment of taxes to the Government to support the development of the country and called for a halt to the practice.

The Assistant Commissioner said the cigarettes were destroyed to serve as a deterrent to others who engage in such activities.
