Tema General Hospital Endowment Fund launched
About GH¢200,000 was raised in an appeal for funds towards the establishment of the Tema General Hospital Endowment Fund at a ceremony in Tema on Monday.
The creation of the Fund, initiated by Mrs Irene Naa Torshie Addo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West, is to assist the Hospital Authorities to provide some of the basic infrastructure to bring the hospital to modern standards.
Speaking at the function, The Right Reverend Winfred Ametefe, Methodist Bishop of the Tema Diocese, said the move was a worthy cause, and therefore urged companies, industries, factories, and public-spirited individuals within the Metropolis to see it as their corporate social responsibility to contribute generously to the Fund.
Bishop Ametefe who is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fund, assured donors that their modest contributions would be used judiciously for the benefit of the hospital.
Dr Charity Sarpong, Medical Director of the Hospital, said it was rather unfortunate that since its inception some 57 years ago, the hospital had not seen any major renovation work.
Dr Sarpong said staff accommodation and the lack of infrastructure were the major challenges facing the hospital, and expressed the optimism that the Fund would go a long way to help meet those needs.
Pastor Anthony Cudjoe of the Lashibi branch of the International Central Gospel Church launched the Fund.
