Public Senior High School fees increased
The Ghana Education Service, in consultation with the Ministry of Education, on Friday announced approved fees of GH¢328.70 for boarding students in Public Senior High Schools for 2011/2012 academic year.
Day students will pay GH¢160.70 while foreign students will pay a tuition fee of GH¢468.72 per term in addition to other charges that are applicable to their enrollment status.
All the fees charges exclude additional Parents Teachers’ Association (PTA) charges for the school in which students have been placed.
A statement in by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and signed by Mr Charles Parker- Allotey, Head of Public Relations, explained that the key highlights of the review in the fees were the upward adjustment of the ceiling for the cost of clothing provided by the schools and the feeding cost per student per day.
“The current feeding cost has been reviewed marginally upwards to GH¢1.80 to enable heads of schools to improve both the quality and quantity of food served, including the conditions for preparing the school meal,” the statement said.
It further explained that the adjustment of the clothing took into account the differential in the quality of fabric, the design and the cost of sewing.
According to the statement, the GES would monitor the use of fees over the next two years under the assurance that heads of schools would manage the funds efficiently and noted that barring any unforeseen challenge, the annual increment of the feeding cost was frozen for two years.
“Heads are reminded that only approved fees as indicated are to be charged. The upper limit of cost for the allocation of exercise and notebooks should be adhered to,” it said.
The GES expressed the hope that heads of institutions would adhere strictly to the fees approved.
