Coalition wants Attorney General to help seek justice for 6-year-old defiled girl
The Upper West Regional branch of the Ghana NGOs Coalition on the Rights of the Child (GNCRC) is calling on the Attorney General (AG) to intervene in the case of a 6-year-old girl who was allegedly defiled by a 22-year-old young man.
The accused, Calistus Gbaale, is said to have allegedly defiled the girl in November last year while the mother of the victim, Mrs. Rose Maaliwombu was away in Accra for official duties.
Mr Kanton Salifu Yussif, a Representative of the GNCRC made the call at a press conference in Wa on Tuesday.
He said the case was sent to the Wa Circuit Court on January 7, 2011 and the accused admitted to committing the offence and pleaded for leniency.
The case, according to him, had been called and adjourned eleven times without judgment being passed.
Mr Yussif said Ghana was a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and should therefore not allow such cases to delay in court without judgment being passed.
The mother of the victim is also pleading with the AG to expedite action on the case to ensure that justice was done to her daughter.
