FDB destroys seized turkey tails and wings at Kpetoe
Mr Patrick Osei, Regulatory Officer of the Food and Drugs Board (FDB), has warned importers against bringing into the country prohibited goods.
He said this when officials of the FDB in Ho destroyed a quantity of turkey tails and wings at Kpetoe.
The products which were packed in three and a half medium size sacks were intercepted at Wudome Barrier near Kpetoe on the Aflao-Ho highway on Saturday by personnel of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The turkey parts were later doused with some chemicals provided by officials of the Environmental Health Department to ensure speedier decay of the goods when they were buried.
Mr Charles Aggor, Collector in Charge of the Kpetoe Patrol Base of the Customs Division of GRA, said his men on duty at the barrier found the items in a Hyundai H100 Urvan travelling from Aflao-Koforidua.
He said a check on the products found that the grade of turkey tails and wings intercepted were prohibited in the country.
Mr Aggor said a middle-aged woman claimed ownership of the products which she said she was taking to Koforidua.
Mr Patrick Osei said the fat content in turkey tail and wings was over 75 per cent, far exceeding the 15 per cent allowed in the country.
He said though fat tastes good in the mouth, it posed a lot of health hazards and cautioned consumers to desist from patronizing such products.
Mr Osei commended the Customs Division of the GRA for its vigilance and warned importers of the product that they could be fined and also asked to bear the cost of destroying of the products if caught.
