NADMO records 43,385 displaced flood victims

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has so far recorded a total of 43,385 affected and displaced people after last Wednesdays rains that hit parts of the country.

The worst affected areas were in the Greater Accra Region with the highest of 43,098, followed by Volta Region, 285 and the Western Region recording the least of two.

The National Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuhpy said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency that the number of the affected people was very alarming.

He said the death toll is 14 people made up of eight males and six females.

Mr Portuphy said in addition more than 480 farmers had their farms destroyed in the Volta Region.

Some of the affected Districts and Sub-metros in Accra  include; Adenta, Tema, Ablekuma North, South and Central, Ga West, Osu Klottey, Okaikoi South and North, Ashiedu Keteke and Lekma in the Greater Accra Region.

The rest are; Adaklu, Ho, Kpando and Hohoe Districts in the Volta Region and East Akyem, Lower Manya, Akwapim South and Kwahu South in the Easter Region.

He explained that 12 teams had already been dispatched to assist the regional, district and zonal rapid assessment efforts in the distribution of relief items including food to registered the victims.

Mr Portuphy said there is focus on some categories of people such as the aged, nursing mothers and the physically challenged.

He said his outfit had so far distributed adequate relief items including mats, mattresses, buckets, basins, cups, plates, mosquito’s nets and clothing.

He said although his outfit had prepared adequately to rescue disaster victims by the help of the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service, he appealed to benevolent and corporate institutions to help.

The Vodafone Foundation, a telecommunication organisation has presented two trucks of assorted items worth more than GHȼ19,000 to NADMO as a social responsibility to assist the flood victims.
