Women urged to heed advice on regular breast cancer checks
Dr Ernest Baawuah Osei-Bonsu, Acting Head of the Oncology Directorate of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has urged women to heed the advice to go for regular breast cancer checks.
He said, it was the only way early detection and treatment could be ensured and added that women could contact any medical doctor for assistance any time they visited the health facility.
Dr Osei-Bonsu was speaking during a health walk to draw public attention to the breast cancer disease in Kumasi.
It brought together a large number of people including the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Ms Animah Wilson, health professionals, students from various tertiary institutions, Ghana Police Service and traders.
Jofel Catering Services, Nestle Ghana Limited, Lansah and Ernest Chemists, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Limited, Kumasi Abbatoir Company Limited, Everpure Mineral Water, Lion’s Club International, Jays Flora and Season Décor and Ghana Oil Company Limited were the sponsors.
Dr Osei-Bonsu said it was important to assist people to become adequately informed about the disease, which accounted for 24 per cent of all cancers reported at the health facilities.
Miss Beatrice Antwi, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Oncology Department, took the women through proper self examination of the breast and the signs they should look out for.
