Court refuses wounded robber bail
A Kumasi Circuit Court has declined pleas for bail by counsel for an alleged robber who suffered gunshot wounds during a firefight and remanded him in prison custody.
Mr Ameyaw Nyamekye had applied to the court to free his client, Baba Ali, on health grounds to allow for the removal of pellets lodged in his body and treatment of a festering wound.
He said the bad odour from the rotten wound was not good for the health of both the accused and his cell mates.
Mr Justice D.W.P. Amedior would have none of that and insisted the counsel produced a medical report by a doctor to support his claim.
Ali had been brought to court limping with the hand and leg swathed in Plastic of Paris (P.O.P). He faces charges of conspiracy and robbery.
The court ordered that he should re-appear on December 5.
A Principal State Attorney, Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Otoo-Boison, told the court that Ali together with one Sulley and Awudu, both on the run, attacked a family at Fumesua-Amanfrom with locally manufactured pistol and knives at about 0130 hours on July 29.
They seized cellular phones, digital camera, modem and GH¢1,575.00.
One of the victims, however, sneaked out and alerted a neighbour who organized other people in the neighbourhood for a showdown with the robbers.
Mr Otoo-Boison said Ali on seeing the people started firing and they returned fire hitting and wounding him in the process.
He was captured while his accomplices ran away.
A formal report was made to the police and Ali was taken to the Ejisu Government Hospital and later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where his hand and leg were put in Plaster of Paris.
