Ghana hikes tariffs on electricity, water by 4%

Ghana has increased tariffs on electricity and water by 3% and 1.07% respectively for the fourth quarter of 2011, the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced today November 30, 2011.

Officials explain the adjustment was due to energy consumption which they say went up 7.1% and price jump of crude oil on international market during the quarter.

Head of Public Affairs of the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah told television station TV3 mid-day news that “there might be increases first quarter 2012 if all indicators used in determining prices go up.”

The prices take effect December 1, 2011.
