UCC Medical School wins public speaking competition
The University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS) emerged winners of the 2nd Annual Inter -medical School Public Speaking competition, organised by the Association of Ghanaian Professionals Living in Ireland.
The competition was contested among medical students from the four public universities in the country namely; University of Cape Coast, University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Development Studies (UDS) on the theme: “Promoting Mental Health in Ghana and Fighting against Stigmatisation.”
The UCCSMS, which made its maiden appearance was represented by Nana Kissi Atefah and Andrew Yaw Nyantekyi, level 400 students and won the competition with 84 points against UDS which scored 76 to take the second position.
KNUST took the third position with 72 points and UG fourth with 68 points.
As part of the prizes the winners would have the opportunity to spend four weeks at St. Patrick and St John of God hospital in Ireland for an exchange programme in Psychiatry.
The Dean of UCCSMS, Professor H.S. Amonoo Kuofi presented the award-winning plaque to the Pro-Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast (UCC) Professor DD Kuupole and commended the students for their efforts and dedication.
“UCCSMS has adopted a curriculum that position students to think and provide practical solutions to problems,” he said.
Professor Kuupole, implored the students to put in more effort to prove that UCCSMS is capable of producing professional medical doctors who are competent in addressing the health needs of the country.
He pointed out that the Medical and Dental Council had attested to the innovations, UCC had introduced into the training of medical doctors in Ghana.
Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health who graced the occasion congratulated the students for the laurels they had won for UCC and urged the other universities to take their academic work seriously.
