$350m facility to connect communities in three Nzema districts to electricity
One hundred and thirty-nine communities in three districts in the Western Region are to be connected to the national power grid within the next six months under the national electrification scheme.
The project would be funded from a 350-million- dollar facility contracted to Weldy Lamont Association, an American Company, to install and supply materials and equipment to over 1,400 villages, towns and communities in Central, Western and Brong Ahafo regions for the electrification programme.
Mr Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Deputy Energy minister and MP for Ellembenle made this known in an address he read on behalf of the Minister of Energy, Dr Joe Oteng Adjei at a sensitization meeting with the people of Gwira Aiyinase at the weekend.
He said the Energy Development Agenda focuses on increasing the access of all households to energy, productive sectors and social infrastructure to facilitate the implementation of growth and poverty reduction strategies towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
The minister said under President Mills’s government, access rate of electricity in the country had been increased from 54 to 72 per cent within the past three years.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Jomoro, Mr Sylvester Nuamah Dadieh, commended the government for spreading development throughout the country, andappealed to the people to return the government to power to enable it to continue building a better nation.
Mr Daniel Eshun, DEC for Ellembenle expressed the people’s appreciation to the government for extending electricity to the local communities in the Gwira Area.
The Nzema East Municipal Chief Executive, The Rev. James Ackah Cobbinah, in a welcoming address commended President Mills for remembering the Nzema area in his developmental agenda.
He asked the people to reciprocate the government’s gesture in the 2012 general election and vote massively for the NDC.
Mr J. W. Atta Simpson, Managing Director of Weldy Lamount Limited said to ensure the early completion of the electrification project, five Ghanaian contractors had been engaged for the work.
The Omanhene of Gwira Traditional Area, Awulae Agama Tuagyan II, who chaired the function, directed chiefs in the area to offer accommodation and other forms of assistance to contractors engaged on the work.
He commended the government for the project and appealed for the construction of roads in the area.
