Pay arrears before X’mas – President Mills directs Accountant-General’s Department

President John Atta Mills

President John Evans Atta Mills has directed the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to effect payment of three months’ arrears of salaries of workers who have been migrated onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), as well as their December salaries, before Wednesday, December  20, 2011.

The directive is believed to be the President‘s Christmas bonus for workers who had done their part to bring the economy to its present status.

A source at the department who confirmed receiving the directive said the department was up to the task and working feverishly towards meeting the deadline.

The President was of the strong belief that Ghanaian workers had contributed significantly to increase productivity which had enabled the government to meet its targets.

The government had pledged to successfully migrate all public sector workers onto the SSSS by September this year.

Workers of many institutions, representing 97 per cent of public sector workers, are currently enjoying salaries under the new and
improved salary structure.

The policy constitutes the largest expenditure demand on the budget, and given the economic deficit the government inherited from the previous government, it was going to be a difficult policy to implement.

The source also challenged workers to play a watchdog role as the government vigorously continued to fight public sector corruption in the country.

Teacher trainees of the Mount Mary College of Education, Somanya, were paid their arrears from March to May,2011.We were told that the rest of our arrears from the months of September, October, November, December,2010, and January and February,2011, would be paid the following month but that never materialised. We eagerly looked foward to it when the Controller and Accountant General said that the arrears would be paid on December 29,2011 but that was a fiasco. Only yesterday,4th January,2012, the arrears credited to my accounts and those of my schoolmates amounted to only GHC 22.00! I should be very grateful if an explanation could be given to us as to why we cannot enjoy our fair share of the national cake.My checks have revealed that all our colleague students in the other colleges have received their arrears.
