Court fines two drivers GH¢840 for motor offences
Madina District Magistrate’s Court Grade One, has fined Ayika Komla a driver of a taxi GH¢480 on his own plea for careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Agnes Boafo said Komla knocked down Madam Florence Nyayaki, 47 on December 8, 2011 at the Madina Rawlings Circle in the Greater Accra Region.
The same court also fined John Kodzo Korbli GH¢360, another taxi driver in a case prosecuted by Deputy Superintendent P. Mario for knocking down one Matthew Dorfe, 34 on the Abokobi Kuotam Estate also in Greater Accra.
He pleaded guilty at the court presided over by Madam Mariama Sammo.
The two convicts would serve three months prison term each in default.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Deputy Commander of the Madina Division of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Charles Ahiamale said the Division recorded less accidents in 2011.
He said last year the division recorded 116 accidents involving 62 commercial vehicles, 86 private cars and seven motorbikes.
ASP Ahiamale said five of the accidents were fatal with 100 injuries.
He said in 2010 there were 129 accident cases involving 73 commercial vehicles, 80 private cars and seven motorbikes. Seven of the cases were fatal with 137 injuries.
ASP Ahiamale said 105 drivers were prosecuted in 2010 and fined a total of GH¢9,370.00 while 90 drivers were put before court in 2011 and were fined a total GH¢11,050.00.
