GNAT unhappy about unpaid salaries to teachers
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Friday said it would resist all attempts to make the Ghanaian teacher a second rate citizen through the actions and inactions of people in authority.
A statement issued by Mrs Irene Duncan Adanusa, General Secretary of GNAT and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra expressed disappointment at the way and manner teachers’ salaries for December 2011 and the three months of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) were paid to them by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).
“The Association will be closely monitoring the payment of the next arrears…which will be due in February, 2012,” it added.
The statement indicated that teachers like all public servants are entitled to their salaries at the end of the month.
It said the reason which had been advanced by the Government for the delay attributing the situation to the commercial banks failure to credit individual teachers account was definitely unacceptable.
“We know that banks can only pay such monies when the bank advice is backed by sufficient funds. Even as at today, a section of teachers have still not received their December, 2011 salaries,” the statement added.
It said some teachers who were not receiving conversion differences but still realised some marginal increases in their salaries with the introduction of the SSSS were worse off in December as they did not receive any arrears.
The names of some teachers were not even captured by the CAGD for the payment of the salary arrears. In addition, their Professional Allowance was deducted from their salaries instead of crediting them as directed by the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning.
“GNAT believes that, these challenges could have been averted had the usual test-run verification exercise been carried out by stakeholders before the payment of the arrears,” it added.

I did not receive my arrears
DOES IT MEAN THAT TEACHERS WILL NOT GET THEIR DECEMBER ARREARS AGAIN?
It was said teachers will recieve 3 month arrears in December 2011, but only a delayed one month arrears was given. When are we going to get our remaining 2 month arrears in the December salary. Even students at the community heath doing just a two year certificate were given 2 month arrears early in December. I don’t know the kind of peoples leading the teachers at the top there. What they know is chopping of money, they don’t care about us. We will all live to see.
