Dagbon Regent calls on Government to resource security agencies ahead of elections
The Regent of Dagbon, Kapankuya Naa Yakubu Abdulai Andani has called on the Government to adequately resource the security agencies ahead of the December elections in order to sustain the peace.
He said there was the need for government not to take for granted the peace the people were enjoying presently.
Regent Kapankuya Naa Yakubu Andani made the call when members of the Yendi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) paid courtesy call on him at his Gbewaa Palace in Yendi in the Northern Region.
He stated particularly where there were already ethnic conflicts, chieftaincy disputes, and various political tension areas.
He indicated that it was always important for people to use the law to seek redress for their grievances instead of resulting to violence.
The Regent said the creation of the Mion new district from Yendi, had left the Yendi Municipality with only few communities and only two area councils. Prior to the creation, there were six area councils.
Regent Kapankuya Naa Yakubu Andani, therefore, appealed to the Electoral Commission to revisit the demarcation before Parliament approved the legislation Instrument (LI).
The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Zakaria Issah said the courtesy call was mainly to thank the Regent for his New Year package to the members of the Municipal Security Council.
It was also to inform him on how far the Council had handled the issue of how the youth of Sambu misbehaved towards the Member of Parliament for Mion Constituency, Mr. Ahmed Yakubu on January 2, 2012 at Sambu when they hurled stones at him.
Mr. Zakaria, who is also the Chairman of the Council, stated that the members of the Yendi Security Council had not taken the case lightly at all and that their investigations had come out with a number of names of suspects.
Mr. Zakaria explained that the attack on the Member of Parliament was due to the siting of the capital of the Mion New District at Sang other than at Sambu.
He said the youth alleged that it was the MP who made the government to site the capital at Sang.
He said the youth leader of Sambu had been warned to ensure that nobody disturbs the peace in the area.
Mr. Zakaria indicated that members visited Sambu and met the youth and the elders and made them to understand that Members of Parliament don’t create districts.
He said it was only the President, who creates New Districts after Electoral Commission and those concern finished with demarcation of the districts.
