Wenchi gets Disabled Centre for craft training
A craft training centre christened “Young City”, has been established at Wenchi in the Brong-Ahafo Region to assist persons with disabilities to learn vocations.
The Centre was set up by Rural Youth Association of Ghana, an NGO, to help the Disabled quest for a dignified life.
Madam Theresa Nyarko-Fofie, Executive Officer of the NGO, and a former Member of Parliament for Nkoranza, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wenchi the centre offered free tuition and accommodation to trainees.
She said parents of trainees would only be responsible for their feeding.
The centre offers training in carpentry, batik, tie and dye printing, dress-making, hairdressing, bead-making, lathe machine operation and baking.
Madam Nyarko-Fofie expressed concern about how some people scorned the Disabled and advised parents of such persons to help them acquire vocational skills for their self- development.
She deplored the negative attitude of parents “who hide their disabled children at home”, saying the practice placed such children in disadvantaged positions.
Anybody can fall victim to such situation any time in life hence persons with disabilities should not be ridiculed, the chief executive officer said.
According to Madam Nyarko-Fofie, some people with disabilities could become important personalities in society, noting, it was a blind person who invented the Braille, which had contributed immensely to the education of the blind world-wide.
Mr. Frank O. Roosevelt, a visually impaired person, was a President of the United States of America, she said.
