Ghana Federation of Disabled initiate plans to engage services of lawyers
The Ghana Federation of Disabled (GFD) has initiated plans to engage the services of lawyers to deal with unscrupulous men who maltreat physically handicapped women.
Mr Joseph Adu-Boampong, National President of the Society of the Physically-Challenged and GFD made this known at the inauguration of the Nkoranza North District branch of the Federation at Busunya.
He said a study had shown that some able-bodied men marry physically-challenged women, have children with them and abandon them to avoid stigmatization.
Mr Adu-Boampong said the federation would soon take legal action against such men.
He appealed to the public not to scorn physically-challenged persons, since it was not their making to be in the condition they found themselves.
Mr Adu-Boampong advised women with disabilities to be very careful when choosing their sexual partners.
He deplored the negative attitude of some parents who hide their disabled children at home and deny them education, saying such acts adversely affected the lives of the victims.
Mr Adu-Boampong commended government for allocating three per cent of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund for the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.
He called on executive members of the federation to be transparent in the management of the funds to ensure that all members get access to the money to improve their lives.
In an address read on his behalf, Mr Kwadwo Agyei-Dwomor, District Chief Executive said it was wrong for people to stigmatize people with disabilities since they talents to contribute towards the development of the country.
He called on members of the federation to make better use of government support by engaging in income-generating activities.
Major Derek Oduro (rtd), MP for Nkoranza North, donated GHȼ400.00 in support of the growth of the federation in the district and advised all persons with disabilities to register with the GFD to enhance their welfare.
Mr Hayford Ameyaw, District President of the federation said more than 50 persons had registered with the local branch and advised parents with children with disabilities to patronise the body.
Nana Takyi Baffo II, Odikro of Tom near Nkoranza, who presided over the occasion, commended the persons with disabilities for coming together to enhance their welfare and development.
