Senegalese Makhtar Diop takes over from Obiagele Ezekwesili as new World Bank Vice President for Africa

The World Bank has announced the appointment of Senegalese Makhtar Diop as its new Vice President for Africa. He will take office May 6, 2012.

In a press statement announcing the appointment today January 17, 2012, the Bank says he takes over from Nigerian Obiagele Ezekwesili who will return to Nigeria early May 2012. She served in that capacity for five years, it says.

According to the Bank, Diop served as the World Bank’s Country Director for Brazil since 2009.

Mr. Diop was a former Finance Minister in Senegal and Chair of the West African Monetary Union (WAEMU) Board of Finance Ministers.

He  joined the World Bank in 2001 and has served in various senior positions, including as the World Bank’s Country Director for Kenya, Eritrea, and Somalia, as well as Director of Strategy and Operations in the Bank’s Latin America and Caribbean region.
