DCE worried about falling educational standards
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akyemansa, Mr. Tom Budu on Thursday expressed worry about the low standards of education in the district.
He expressed the sentiment during an interaction with the Birim Media Practitioners Association (BIMPA) at his residence at Anyinase.
The DCE said the development and empowerment of unskilled youth was of great concern to the NDC government because the youth were the future leaders of the country.
He indicated that the initial moral training of children was fundamentally the responsibility of parents, and said “That role should not be relinquished to the school, otherwise they would fall victim to child delinquency and other related vices”.
Mr. Budu urged the business community and other non-governmental organizations to help provide skilled training to people in the deprived areas.
He appealed to the business community, especially those in the Akyemansa District to assist schools there with infrastructure, equipment and funding, to help make education affordable and accessible in the district.
The DCE called on media practitioners to use their platforms to portray the country’s positive image to the outside world. They should also desist from using their media to promote the use of intemperate language which sought to polarise the nation’s political landscape.
Later in an interaction with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Budu stated that the Akyemansa District Education Directorate presented 1,289 candidates for the 2010 Basic Schools’ Certificate Examination (BECE), out of which 335 candidates passed, representing 27 per cent.
He said about ten schools in the area scored zero per cent, and congratulated three schools namely Elim Academy, Wisdom Preparatory and Akokoase Emmanuel Methodist which obtained 100 per cent to “brighten an otherwise gloomy picture”.
The DCE further stated that the District Education Oversight Committee had met to fashion out steps to assist the district education directorate, to ensure an improved performance in subsequent examinations and generally to ensure quality education in the district.
The Oversight Committee, according to Mr. Budu, directed the massive transfer of circuit supervisors, head teachers and teachers in the District, the re-alignment of the circuits from five to eight; introduction of incentives to attract qualified teachers to the district and to ginger existing ones to perform better.
The DCE stated that under the GET-Fund, contracts were awarded for the construction of a six- unit Classroom block at Paa Wudu, a three-unit classroom block at Atanurom and another three-unit classroom block at Techiman. He added that the assembly had also constructed a six-unit classroom block each at Boso Villa and Ayeboafo.
“Additionally, the district assembly is distributing 1,040 dual desks and 800 mono desks estimated at GH¢100,400”, he said.
He indicated that the numerous school projects in the district were part of strategies put in place to help improve the standards of education and help enhance teaching and learning in the District.
