GIFNet calls for decentralization of Disability Council
Members of the New Juaben Municipal Governance Issues Forum Network (GIFNet), a civil society organisation, has called for the decentralisation of the activities of the Disability Council.
They expressed the need for the council to have offices in the regions and districts where majority of the people with disabilities reside.
The GIFNet made the call at a sensitisation meeting in the New Juaben Municipality on the disability law and the benefit that the people could derive by supporting the implementation of the legislature.
The members suggested that the sensitisation campaign should target heads of department and policy makers in the municipality to ensure that they inculcate the policies included in the disability law in their programmes and activities.
The Municipal Coordinator of the GIFNet, Mr Edmund Quaynor, observed that the implementation of the law would enable people with disabilities to contribute their quota towards the development of the country.
He said it is estimated that about 10 per cent of Ghanaians have disabilities and therefore any activity that denied their participation in national affairs meant that the country had lost about 10 per cent of its total economic capacity.
