2012 Afcon: Local Organising Committee to tackle security lapse at Estadio de Bata

Equatorial Guinea’s Local Organising Committee (COCAN) for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations are scheduled to meet later this week to discuss security lapses at the Estadio de Bata last Wednesday.

Scores of fans jumped unto the pitch moments after Equatorial Guinea scored the late winner against Senegal, as they revelled in the historic feat.

The sorry scene halted play for some minutes as security personnel tried to get the fans off the pitch.

The inner perimeter at the plush Estadio de Bata is at a low level and over-joyous fans can easily jump unto the running tracks and eventually find their way onto the playing field.

The incident has been one of the major minuses of the COCAN, who have so far delivered a standard organisation as far as the tournament is concerned.

“We will meet later this week to tackle the concern. I understand the response of the fans and we will plot a strategy to forestall future occurrences.

“The security personnel handled the issue well and there were no casualties,” a COCAN official told GNA Sports.

The official said the new strategy will be adopted at either stadia (Bata or Malabo) during the quarter final match involving the host team and a yet-to-be determined team from Group B.

Equatorial Guinea will play Zambia in the final Group A match in Sunday in Malabo.
