E. T. Mensah

The Acting Minister of Education, Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, on Thursday inaugurated three boards with the core mandate of assisting the Ministry in its quest to improve on education in the country.

The boards were; the National Inspectorate Board, the National Teaching Council and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment.

Speaking at the inauguration, he noted that the establishment of the three autonomous boards was mandated by the new Education Act of 2008, Act 778.

“The establishment of the three autonomous agencies seeks to provide specific functions, which, collectively, are expected to improve the academic performance of schools at the pre-tertiary level and raise the learning achievements of learners”.

The functions of the National Inspectorate Board include the inspection of schools, the enforcement of standards to be observed at the basic and second cycle levels at both public and private schools.

The core functions of the National Teaching Council also include the right to revoke a teacher’s license for professional misconduct, advice the sector minister on matters relating to the professional standing and status of teachers and the review of ethical standards for teachers.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has also been mandated to determine the goals, aims and the structure of courses at the various levels of pre-tertiary education and to recommend new subjects, as and when they become necessary for the educational system.

Mr E.T. Mensah noted that the work of the three bodies would go a long way to ensure that the right environment and conditions existed in school for effective teaching.

He said the membership of the boards included representatives from the universities, religious organisations, employers association, as well as other educational stakeholders.

“I have no doubt that the inauguration of these three new boards would improve quality education delivery in this country”.
