GAWU to construct youth development centre in Kpando-Torkor community
The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of Ghana Trades Union Congress, has acquired four plots of land to construct a youth development facility for the people of Kpando-Torkor in the Kpando District of the Volta Region.
The facility when completed will comprise an office space, a child development cantre and Information Communication and Technology office.
Mr Edward Kareweh, Deputy General Secretary of GAWU, announced this when the union presented 10 desktop computers and accessories to three schools and an orphanage in the area at Kpando-Torkor on Friday.
The beneficiary institutions were Kpando-Torkor Roman Catholic Primary school, Kpando-Torkor Evangelical Primary school, Kpando-Torkor District Assembly Junior High School and Missahoe Children’s orphanage Home.
He urged teachers to devote their time towards child development in the community and also called on parent not to engage their children in child labour activities, because it could affect their growth and development.
Mr Kareweh, expressed the hope that the computers presented would enhance the performance of teaching and learning of ICT in the schools to improve on their grades in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mr Andrews Tagoe, Head of Training and Programmes, GAWU, said the union over the years had organised inland canoe fishermen training as part of activities to address the child labour menace.
He said the union had also supported the Kpando-Torkor community to build a bore-hole to make potable water available to the people, especially school children.
He said the leadership of the union had also put in place programmes to improve on the working conditions of the fishermen through training in the area of occupational safety, decent work and basic trade union principles.
“We have also withdrawn over 400 child labourers, some of whom have now turned into child labour activist,” he noted.
Ms Mary Fleku, Circuit Supervisor, Akpini West Circuit, Kpando District, who received the items on behalf of the beneficiary institutions, expressed gratitude to the leadership for the presentation.
She noted that the schools in the community lacked the basic ICT tools to enhance effective teaching and learning of the subject.
Master Dzorkah Innocent, a primary six pupil, who spoke with the Ghana News Agency, expressed excitement about his school getting a computer.
“We are only used to the theory aspect but now we can also practically experiment,” he said.
