NCCE ready for Elections 2012
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on Friday rolled out a strategic activism blue-print towards creating conducive peaceful environment for election 2012.
The blue-print tagged: “Stand Up for Ghana,” focuses on new brand image for the commission which revolve around promoting and sustaining democracy with a more dynamic approach to inculcate it in the citizenry.
Launching the blue-print and a New Logo in Accra, Mrs Charlotte Osei, NCCE Chairman explained that after 18 years of existence, “NCCE Commission members believe it is time to take another look at our Constitutional mandate and carve a more vibrant and revitalised path into the future.
“The new path requires engaging the citizenry at all levels, constantly, acknowledging that the people are at the heart of true democracy, that the people must be sensitised to own the Constitution, the government and the democratic process.”
The NCCE Chairman described the democratic dispensation as a journey and not a destination, which requires proactive work every day to strengthen its pillars and tenets…”and as we journey along, we make changes for the greater good of the majority”.
Mrs Osei classified the introduction of the biometric voter registration and the granting of voting rights to prisoners as new pragmatic initiatives along the democratic journey to move it to a higher standard.
She said as part of the proactive activism to create space for political education, the NCCE has developed a new website to serve as public information platform on consistent basis.
In view of the new image and focus for dynamism the Commission has developed a new organisational structure aimed at stream lining its internal operations with modern administrative and operational work.
She said a Gender and Equality Desk has been created to ensure that all NCCE programmes are inclusive of all segments of the population and also collaborate with external organisations working towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
Mrs Osei said: “We are also restructuring the way we do our programmes, there will be better coordinating and roll out from head office through the regional offices to the about 180 district offices.
“We will work around themes in a more cohesive manner…this also means we will jealously guard our constitutional mandate and we will respect the mandates of other governance institutions.”
She therefore called on the media to support the Commission on its new path as the media forms a critical voice of the people.
The NCCE Chairman tasked the media to rise to higher standards, “put Ghana and Ghanaians first as collectively we have a duty to sustain and promote democracy”.
She challenged the business community to join forces with NCCE in the delivery of its mandate in the broader interest of Ghana.
The NCCE Chairman used the occasion to introduce the new-seven member Commission which includes four women and three men.
The launch was attended by the donor community including country representatives of European Union, UNDP, Hanns Seidel Foundation and the cross section of the public.
