Gold Fields to build $592,000 ultra modern hostel facility for UMaT
Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) Tarkwa Mine, would build a hostel for the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) this year.
The hostel, estimated to cost $592,200, will accommodate 137 students, the GFGL, Tarkwa Mine, an official of the company said at a consultative committee meeting with stakeholders in the company’s catchment areas.
The meeting discussed the achievements and the way forward for Goldfields Ghana Foundation Project which was instituted in 2002 to support the communities in the company’s catchment area.
Since the inception of the foundation, $15.7 million has been spent on community projects from 2002 till date.
The company has estimated to spend $4.3 million on its community projects for this year and $2.6 million has already been spend on community projects the previous year.
Apart from community projects, Gold Field, Tarkwa Mine has sponsored 282 people to senior high schools, tertiary, vocational and apprenticeship programs.
Addressing the meeting, the Acting General Manager of the company, Mr Casper Dzomeku, said the company would do its best to ensure people in the company’s catchment area are well resourced.
Mr Dzomeku said this year will be a challenging one since taxes had been increased for mining companies and gave the assurance that the company will live up to expectation.
