Agro-food producers need exposure to dynamics of production – Expert

Mr Benjamin Bankas, Business Development Officer of Atlas Foods Ghana Limited on Sunday stressed the need for small-scale producers of agro-produce to be continually schooled in the economics of production.

He said besides staying abreast with how the interplay of local and international factors affected their businesses, these producers should also know about the linkages between turnovers and pricing among others.

Mr Bankas told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that producers of honey for example needed to increase volumes of production to meet regular orders at competitive prices rather than small measures at slow moving prices.

He said the opportunities opened for Ghana by Atlas Foods’ acquisition of the accreditation to export honey produced in Ghana to Europe were huge and the response from honey producers should be that of “business knowledge based revolutionary zeal”.

“Honey producers must put more money in their businesses, rehearse their production practices to remove waste and adopt in-built quality control measures to meet standards,” Mr Bankas said.

A total of 18 tonnes of natural honey bought from mainly the Nkwanta areas of the Volta Region was last Saturday shipped to Ireland, the debut shipment under the accreditation deal acquired last year.
