Two die in accident at Santasi
A 10-year old pupil and an employee of the Ghana Post Company (GPC) were killed in a horrific accident that occurred at the Santasi lorry station near the Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) in Kumasi on Tuesday morning.
Five other school children of the Star of Hope International School at Ahenema Kokoben in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District also sustained serious injuries and are reported to be in critical condition at the Accident and Emergency Centre of the Komfo-Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The deceased were identified as Sandra Akosa and Mrs Esther Joan Afful, 45, Manager of the GPC, Santasi.
They were run over by a DAF truck with registration number AS 5018 12 in a freak accident at about 0800 hours.
Superintendent Godact Dodzi Hlordze, Ashanti Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), who confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the children had gathered along the road waiting to be picked by their school bus when the tragedy occurred.
The driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle after hitting a Toyota Hilux that had been parked on the shoulder of the road and ran directly into the by-standers.
Mrs Afful was said to be on her way to her office when she got caught up in the accident. She was trapped under the truck and pulled out lifeless.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Samuel Sarpong, has already visited the KATH and was briefed on the condition of the injured pupils by the Chief Executive of the hospital, Professor Ohene-Adjei.
