Joint UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan makes first move on Syria crisis

Kofi Annan - Special Envoy to Syria

Former UN Boss Mr. Kofi Annan will be in New York from February 29 to March 2, 2012 to hold several meetings on the crises in Syria, his office has announced.

“During his visit, Mr. Annan will have a series of meetings with the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, and hold consultations with Member States on the crisis in Syria,” the envoy’s office said in a public statement.

This will be Mr Annan’s first act after both the UN and the Arab League appointed him as a special envoy last week to help solve the unrest in the Middle Eastern country.

Mr. Annan, according to the statement, intends to travel to Cairo to meet the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Nabil al-Araby, and plans to visit other countries in the region soon thereafter.
