Ghanaian referees threaten FA over recent attacks

The Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), has expressed anger over treatments meted out to their members during Premier League matches and has threatened to advise themselves if culprits involved are not brought to book.

Referee Patrick Kyeremanteng was last Sunday beaten and hospitalized after supporters of Ebusua Dwarfs assaulted the referee and his assistants, George Seidja and Augustine Akugri for allegedly denying them a genuine goal in their Match against Aduana Stars at Cape Coast.

In a strong worded letter to the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) chanced upon by the GNA Sports, it said “Until this deplorable act is properly investigated and the requisite action taken against the culprits, we shall advise ourselves accordingly”.

The letter which described the attack as “brutal” said, even though RAG cherished their role in the success of the ongoing Premier League, they are duty bound to ensure the safety of their members.

In an interview later with GNA Sports on Tuesday, Alex Quartey, General Secretary of RAG said they prefer to keep close to their chests their next line of action whilst they expect the GFA to take appropriate action to stop such future occurrences.

Alex Quartey said “should the action of the FA fail to meet our expectations, we shall think of what to do next but I want to assure you that, we shall come out tough on this particular incident”.

The General Secretary who described the attack on the referee as primitive, said the matter is expected to be handled by the Disciplinary Committee of the GFA, adding that they can only take the necessary action after the Committee has come out with its ruling.

Asked whether RAG will advise its members to boycott the league, “he said when we get to the bridge we shall cross it accordingly”.
