Recalcitrant Kumasi drivers pay total fine of GH¢93,915
Three hundred and ninety drivers in Kumasi were in 2011 fined a total of GH¢93,915.00 by the courts for various road traffic offences.
They were arrested by the Kumasi Police Central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) for driving without license, carrying excess passengers, speeding vehicles, careless and inconsiderate driving.
Police Chief Superintendent Godact Dodzi Hlordzi, Ashanti Regional MTTU Commander, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, in all, 503 offending drivers were prosecuted.
Out of the number, 25 were freed, while the cases of 78 others are still pending.
Bench warrants had also been issued for the arrest of 10 of the offenders, he added.
Ashanti Region recorded 2,162 road accidents in 2011, which claimed 326 lives while 2,683 others were injured.
