Ghanaian drug ring leader jailed 14 years in US for heroin smuggling

A sixty-two year old Ghanaian named Edward Macauley, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by a US Court for smuggling heroin into Virginia.

Edward Macauley, who is the leader of an international heroin smuggling ring, was using the Dulles International Airport to do the act after his organization recruited Ghanaian citizens living legally in the US to act as couriers.

He was arrested in Ghana in 2011 and extradited to Virginia to face federal charges.

Macauley pleaded guilty in January and is being sentenced at US District Court in Alexandria on Friday, reports the Associated Press April 6, 2012.

The 14-year term imposed by the judge matched the prosecutor’s recommendation. Macauley’s lawyer had asked for the mandatory minimum of 10 years, citing Macauley’s age, American university radio, WAMU has reported.
