Obama nominates new US Ambassador to Ghana to replace Donald Teitelbaum

US President Barack Obama has nominated a replacement for the country’s ambassador to Ghana.

Obama nominated Gene A. Cretz for the post of Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana when he announced some key persons to join his administration, according to a statement issued by the White House April 11, 2012.

He will replace current Ambassador Donald Teitelbaum who was nominated by George Bush March 5, 2008. He was sworn in on July 16, 2008.

It is not clear when Cretz, who is currently the US Ambassador to Libya, will take over from Teitelbaum, but the White House statement quoted Mr Obama as saying “I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.”

Gene A. Cretz is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor. In 2008, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

From 2004 to 2007, Cretz was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Tel Aviv.  From 2003 to 2004, he was assigned to the US Embassy in Damascus where he served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires.  From 2001 to 2003, he was Minister-Counselor for Economic and Political Affairs at the US Embassy in Egypt.
