Ghana’s first apps award to recognise local developers
The first ever awards to recognise and honour application developers in Ghana has been launched.
The awards called TopApps Award 2012, was launched Thursday April 5, 2012 in Accra.
Some innovations have been seen in the Ghanaian apps circuit in the last few years making some observers of the apps world think Ghana is coming up as the next apps hub in Africa after Kenya.
Some of the remarkable apps that have been developed in Ghana include Streemio a mobile music streaming app, Saya for sending SMS at about 1000th of the usual cost of sending SMS on the mobile phone.
” The main objective of TopApps Award is for application and software developers to showcase their portfolio of mobile, SMS and web apps or games, as well as win awards,” says Maximus Ametorgoh, the MD of PoPOut, the company that is organising the award.
He says the award includes cash prizes, plaques, listing on Ghana Apps Store, free hosting and media features.
“Unlike apps competitions, this award is the mother of all individual app awards,” he added.
He said awards will be given in the following categories:
Top App of the year, Mobile App of the year, Web App of the year, SMS App of the year, Most Innovative New App, Top User Experience App, Entertainment App of the year, Social App of the year, Top App Developer, Top App Company and Special Recognition Award.
The call for nominations is open and will close on Friday May 18, 2012.
The awards, the organisers say however are exclusively for apps developed in Ghana by Ghanaians.
