70-year-old farmer jailed for impregnating 13-year-old

A 70-year old farmer, Kofi Adanu who impregnated a 13-year-old girl was on Monday sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.

Adanu was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by Ms Sedina Agbemava.

He told the court “I know what I did was bad.”

The victim, an orphan is now four months pregnant.

Police Chief Inspector I .A.A Ahor, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant was a mason staying at Haatso, near ECOMOG, in Accra. The victim lives at Danfa, near Ayi Mensah in Accra with her grandmother.

Chief Inspector Ahor said Adanu had grandchildren whom the victim normally went to play with.

He said Adanu took advantage of that and had sex with the victim and offered her money urging her not to disclose her ordeal to anyone else she would die.

However, the victim’s classteacher noticed some physical changes in her and when she (the victim) was quizzed she let the cat out of the bag.

The complainant got wind of the victim’s plight and conducted his own investigations which indicated that it was Adanu who had been defiling the victim, who sometimes found it difficult to get food to eat and as a result took advantage of her plight.

When Adanu was interrogated he disclosed that he was only helping the victim and gave her money anytime he defiles her.
