Ghana ranks 108 on World Bank’s 2012 Trade Logistics Performance Indicators

Ghana placed 108 out of 155 countries on the World Bank’s 2012 Logistics Performance Indicators (LPI) published May 15, 2012.

Ghana recorded a score of 2.51 out of five.

The indicators are based on a comprehensive world survey of international freight forwarders and express carriers.

According to the LPI, Ghana’s performance was 48.2% of the best performer in the rankings. Singapore was the top performer with a score of 4.13, followed by Hong Kong SAR, China (4.12), Finland (4.05), Germany (4.03) and the Netherlands (4.02) placing third, fourth and fifth respectively.

South Africa who placed 23rd topped Africa scoring 3.67 with a percentage of 85.5.

African countries ahead of Ghana in the LPI aside South Africa were Tunisia, Benin, Egypt, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Mauritius, Niger, Tanzania, Namibia, Guinea Bissau, Togo, Central African Republic, Zimbabwe and Cameroon.

African nation Burundi placed last in the rankings with 1.61 score.

According to the LPI, high income economies dominate the top logistics rankings, while the economies with the worst performance are least developed countries that are also often landlocked, small islands, or post-conflict states.

Nevertheless, the study indicated that logistics performance is not simply determined by the level of per capita income, as many countries across different income groups have done better than their peers.

According to the World Bank’s survey, progress in trade logistics performance slowed down over the last two years amid the global recession.

However, countries that pursued aggressive reforms were said to have continued to improve their performance. “Countries like Chile, China, India, Morocco, South Africa, Turkey, and the USA all improved their previous performance,” the study said.
