Ghana’s day of shame as floodlights fail to light up during World Cup qualifier

Friday June 1, 2012 will go down in football history as Ghana’s day of shame. Official lethargy and inefficiency probably threw the country into a quandary. The floodlights at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi failed to light up as Ghana played Lesotho in a Word Cup qualifier. Ghana was leading 4-0.

About 30 minutes to the end of the game, the entire stadium was thrown into total darkness forcing the referee to halt proceedings and ask for the floodlights to be switched on, but the lights would not switch on.

After holding the game for some time, the referee had to call off the match.

Clearly, this is a national disgrace, a shame that won’t go away now.

Ghanaians in general have been suffering regular, and inconsistent power supply. They are longsuffering and though, the complain, they bear their disappointments stoically and it appears officialdom has taen them for granted.

The commentator at the game, Kwabena Yeboah did not hide his anger, and disappointment when he aptly described the situation as ‘most embarrassing’ for the country.

According to him, the floodlights were tested the previous day and they were working, but a power failure today ensured that the lights didn’t come on. He then asked “what about the power plants at the stadium?”

Ghanaians on social networking sites Twitter and Facebook are livid and are not mincing words. The are calling for heads to roll!
