Kumasi Polytechnic closes down indefinitely
Authorities of the Kumasi Polytechnic have announced an indefinite close down of the school following the continued strike of the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG).
Mr Robert Kyei-Gyau, the Public Relations Officer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the decision was in conformity with the polytechnic’s statute, which “states that when students remain idle on campus for 21 days the polytechnic should be closed down.”
The second semester should have ended by Saturday, June 16, after the students had finished writing their examinations.
Mr Kyei-Gyau said given the unfortunate development, the final year students would have to be recalled to write their final examination papers as soon as the lecturers call off their strike.
Continuing students are expected to write the second semester examinations during the first semester of the next academic year.
Members of the POTAG have refused to work for the last three weeks to back their demand for migration onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).
Calls by the ministries of education, finance and the fair wages and salary commission to the association to end the industrial action as discussions continue to address their concerns had gone unheeded.
The teachers remain adamant, insisting that until the money hit their bank accounts, they would not return to the lecture halls.
