Ghana scoops four medals on day one of ECOWAS Games

Ghana made clear their intent of dominance at the 2012 Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Games when they grabbed four medals on the opening day.

Ghana won two medals each in the 800m (women) and the 1500m (Men) as the Games kicked off on Saturday at the El-Wak Stadium, Accra.

The medals in women’s even was won by Agnes Abu (2:12:35s) and Rita Luonab (2:16:65s) at the second position to claim silver and bronze medals with Nigeria’s Shimmmngey Agber winning the Gold with a time of 2:10:51secs to send signals of their desire to defend their feats in the first Games.

In the 1500m men, Azumah Sampson of Ghana won gold in a time of 3:57:14s with compatriot Bright Atta-Gyamfi winning the silver after finishing on 4:03:63 to bring the smiles on the partisan home supporters whilst David Barnabas of Nigeria won bronze after making it in 4:04:19secs.

The Games continues on Sunday with other events at the Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium.
