Ministers shed tears for Mills
Tears flowed for late President Mills, as thousands of mourners clad in red and black attire converged at the Koforidua Jackson’s Park on Tuesday for a memorial service to mark one-week of his demise.
The mourners could not hold their tears as hymns and dirges were poured for the late President by individuals and choirs who had gathered.~
Mourners from all walks of life including the clergy, chiefs and queens in the region, service commanders, heads of government departments and agencies gathered for the memorial.
Other mourners included regional and constituency executives of the New Patriotic party (NPP), heads and representatives from the private sector, traders and the general public.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Victor Smith, and his Deputy, Mr Ebenezer Terlabi, who sat in state to receive mourners as early as 0900 hours could not hold their tears back as the Suhum Youth Choir and the Police band played hymns.
Matters became worse when the wives of the Regional Minister and his deputy joined by other women took to the stage to sing a farewell song.
At that point the Master of Ceremony (MC) pleaded with the clergy on the dais to console the Regional Minister and his deputy, who were sobbing uncontrollably.
The Regional Minister told the gathering that the late President had reported for work as usual on that fateful Tuesday but collapsed and was rushed to the 37 military hospital where all efforts to resuscitate him proved futile.
He said the “peaceful father for all died at 1415 hours and the shock and pain of his death has hit Ghana like a thunderbolt”.
In a short exhortation, the Koforidua Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Miah said no human or spirit had power over death and therefore it could come at the appointed time God had scheduled for every human being.
Referring to the scriptures in Ecclesiastes, he stated that events leading to death were therefore unpredictable and differs from man to man and added that for that reason people must be diligent in all their dealings.
Apostle Miah said Professor Mills had paid his due to society and as well left a legacy worthy of emulation that the very things that he lived for – peace and unity, had become evident in his death.
Later a book of condolence was opened for the general public.
