Fire guts Asafo market in Kumasi
Property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis was on Saturday destroyed when fire gutted a section of the Asafo Market in Kumasi.
Items destroyed included books, foot wears, confectionaries, plastic products and other personal effects.
There were no casualties and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
However, investigations indicated that the incident might have been triggered by an electrical fault in one of the container shops sited at the entrance of the market.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the scene, some of the affected traders were in a pensive mood, counting the cost of their losses
Auntie Afua Pomaah, a trader, told the GNA of the blow dealt her as a result of the incident as she had almost lost everything in her container.
The fire, she said, took about two hours to be quenched and lauded the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response.
Officials of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly led by Mr Samuel Sarpong, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), had toured the scene of the incident.
The MCE promised a full-scale enquiry into the incident.
