NRSC says will meet 23% reduction target on traffic crashes by December 2012

Mr Noble John Appiah, Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC),on Friday assured that the Commission would achieve its 23 per cent reduction target on traffic crashes by December this year.

He said though it failed in meeting targets for the mid-year, it was doubling its efforts to ensure that traffic crashes related deaths were not more than 800 by December.

Mr Appiah said this at a two-day mid-year review conference of the Commission in Kumasi.

It was on the theme, “Assessing the 23 % reduction in National RTCs and fatalities in 2012.”

Mr Appiah said it was, “disheartening that at this time and age 2000 people lose their lives through traffic crashes in a year,” and said the Commission was re-energising to fight road crashes.

“We cannot keep blaming other stakeholders. This second half, we will look at areas we did not do well and scale up our interventions to reduce crashes.” He said.

Mr Appiah urged the staff of the Commission to show more commitment to work and “be passionate to change the current situation.”

He advised the regional offices of the Commission to engage the media to help make their campaigns successful.

Regional managers of the Commission presented mid-year reports and outlined several strategies and interventions including, closer collaborations with the police and other major stakeholders to meet set targets.

The regional reports indicated that the use of motorcycles for commercial purposes was a major contributing factor to traffic crashes.
