President of RoCAL, Mr Enoch Jiggles Boakye-Gyimah launching the 10th anniversary

The Rotaract Club of Accra-Labone (RoCAL) Ghana, a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women, on July 18, 2012 launched its 10th anniversary in Accra taking the issue of Hepatitis ‘B’ and Polio as the flagship projects to mark the celebration.

Chartered by Rotary International on August 6, 2002, officials at RoCAL said the club will be embarking on community based projects which focus on Hepatitis B sensitization and prevention campaign and also fight against polio.

During the year-long celebration spanning mid-2012 to first-half of 2013, the club will also undertake programmes that will also boost basic education and literacy adding reducing child mortality will also not be ignored.

Launching the anniversary at a ceremony, President of RoCAL, Mr Enoch Jiggles Boakye-Gyimah said “To emphasize the object of Rotary/Rotaract which is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as the basis of worthy enterprise, the club will be embarking on community based projects which focus on basic education and literacy, reducing child mortality, eradicating Polio and a Hepatitis B sensitization and prevention campaign.”

Giving details of the Hepatitis ‘B’ project, Mr Nicholas Adjei, Projects Director of the club noted that the programme will take place in Accra and will “include screening, education and subsidized vaccination for about 500 persons”.

Mr Adjei said the vaccination for Hepatitis ‘B’ will be in three phases over a period of four months hence “there will be three separate sessions of the project within the period to allow all three shots to be taken for persons who participate from the beginning of the project”.

With the world getting close to the complete eradication of polio, RoCAL believes that helping in pushing the agenda forward will not be out of place as its bigger family, Rotary International, has been noted for the fight against polio. In this sense, the Club said it plans to hold a polio programme known as the “This Close” concert aim at increasing the fight.

The club has also started a beautification project which includes painting and planting of hedges at the Ringway Junior High School in Accra. The project is expected to be completed end of August 2012.

Also, it intends to donate medical equipment to the Agona-Abodom Community Clinic near Swedru in the Central Region.

The club estimated that about 90% of the funds will be put to community service and therefore appealed to corporate Ghana for support.
