Tension mounts at Akuse
Tension has mounted at Akuse following plans by the Manya Krobo Traditional Council to celebrate the recent decision of the Supreme Court that, Akuse, was part of the Lower Manya Municipal Assembly and for that matter part of Eastern Regionat Akuse on Saturday July 21, 2012.
The planned celebrations did not go down with some chiefs of Akuse who owe allegiance to the Osudoku Traditional Area and wanted Akuse to be part of the Greater Accra Region.
Early Saturday morning, the chiefs who were against the planned celebrations of the Manya Krobo Traditional council, mobilized some youths to mount road blocks on the Akuse main road, apparently to prevent the members of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council from entering the Akuse township.
The Akuse Police and a re-enforcement team of policemen from Kpong moved in to clear the road blocks, since the road was a public asset and permission had not been sort to had it closed.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, Mr Kwabena Gyamera-Yeboah who confirmed the developments at Akuse said a contingent of policemen had been discharged from Koforidua to reinforce the police presence at the Akuse township to ensure that peace prevailed.
He said efforts were being made to convince the members of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council to suspend the celebrations at Akuse or if possible to organize the celebrations at Odumase.
No arrest had been made.
The Supreme Court’s decision was based on a petition filed by some chiefs of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council against a legislative Instrument which made Akuse part of Greater Accra .
On June 13, the Supreme Court by a unanimous decision declared as procedurally unconstitutional the placement of Akuse boundary as part of Dangme West District, now Shai Osudoku in the Greater Accra Region.
The court said it was procedurally unconstitutional, null and void because the Legislative Instrument (LI) 1983 that placed Akuse under Greater Accra Region exceeded the statutory maturity period of 21 working days.
Mr Justice William Atuguba, Acting Chief Justice, who read the ruling, said whether Akuse was part of Osuduku in the Greater Accra Region or Lower Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region was a matter that should have been determined by the chieftaincy institution.
He said the court could therefore not deal with the case unless the National House of Chiefs had considered it.
The nine-member panel included, Professor Justice Date-Baah, Mr Justice Julius Ansah, Mrs Justice Sophia Adinyira and Mr Justice Jones Dotse.
The rest are; Mr Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, Mr Justice Anni Yeboah, Mr Justice Sule Gba
