Three armed robbers have been sentenced to a total of 100 years’ imprisonment by the Accra Circuit Court after they had pleaded guilty to the charges of of conspiracy to rob and robbery.
They are Musah Mohammed, Kofi Yeboah and Kwame Owusu, alias Ampoma, all unemployed.
The convicts pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to rob and robbery and the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, handed them the sentences.
All of them were sentenced to five years each on the charge of conspiracy, while Musah and Owusu were sentenced to 25 years each on the charge of robbery.
Yeboah, who is an ex-convict, was sentenced to 50 years for the charge of robbery.
A fourth accomplice, Adams Sifiw, a trader, however, pleaded not guilty to one count of dishonestly receiving and was remanded until July 31, 2012.
The facts of the case, as presented by Superintendent Kofi Blagodzi, were that the complainant was a tailor at Kasoa, while the accused persons lived at the Kokomba Market in Accra.
He said on July 8, 2012, the complainant, who had closed from work, was going home and on reaching the footbridge at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle about 2.30 a.m., Musah, Yeboah, Owusu and another person at large attacked him with a knife and ordered him to surrender all his belongings.
Supt Blagodzi said the complainant raised up his hands and begged his assailants, who searched him and removed two mobile phones valued at GH¢140 and cash of GH¢72 from his pocket.
The complainant, he said, pleaded with the robbers to give him GH¢1 for transport home.
While all that was going on, witnesses in the matter who had seen what was happening rushed onto the scene, but the robbers bolted.
Luck, however, eluded Musah, as he was arrested and one of the mobile phones retrieved from him before he was handed over to the police.
Musah was said to have admitted the offence and led the police to arrest the other robbers who also admitted the offence.
Sifiw was also later arrested for buying the stolen mobile phone.
