Sunyani, Fiapre tension looms over boundary dispute

A protracted boundary dispute is gradually rearing its ugly head between Sunyani and Fiapre traditional councils in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The two traditional areas have for centuries lived in harmony until the recent establishment of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) at the premises of defunct School of Forestry.

That portion of land is the center of the controversy. Recently Sunyani Traditional Council, which has Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II as its president, held a press conference claiming ownership of the land.

At a counter press conference on Tuesday “to set the records straight” Fiapre Traditional Council, appealed to the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to urgently speed up the process of resolving the dispute to forestall anarchy and chaos.

Nana Opoku Ababio II, Chief of Fiapre who read the statement at the press conference, said it was unfortunate Sunyani Traditional Council was claiming ownership of the land despite the fact that the dispute was being resolved by the Brong-Ahafo Regional Lands Commission and the REGSEC.

He said the two councils had recently appeared before the REGSEC and were asked to remain calm and cooperate in finding an amicable solution to the matter.

“We thought the chief of Sunyani would take the advice to wait for the outcome rather than pre-empting the resolution of same through the unfortunate press conference he held just two days after the meeting,” the chief said.

Flanked by some sub-chiefs and all clad in red and black apparel, Nana Opoku Ababio alleged that  “Until Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri was made chairman of the Regional Land Commission, Sunyani Traditional Council never made any claim to any part of Fiapre stool land.”

He said the Sunyani chief was using his position as chairman of the Commission to frustrate the Commission in determining the actual boundary and unlawfully annex Fiapre stool lands.

Nana Opoku Ababio appealed to the government to revoke the appointment of the Sunyani chief as chairman of the Regional Lands Commission.

He gave the assurance that the chiefs and people of Fiapre would not pre-empt and prejudice efforts being made by the REGSEC in resolving the boundary dispute.
